Expert Care Close to Home

A breast cancer diagnosis may be frightening, but there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic. The five-year survival rate for Stage I breast cancer is 98.9 percent, and the survival rate for Stage II breast cancer is 85.2 percent. It’s also comforting to recognize that there are 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.

When you or someone you love is diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s important to know that cutting-edge, personalized care is available right here in Rockland County at The Breast Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Studies have shown that traveling an hour or more for cancer care can negatively affect a patient’s treatment, outcome and quality of life. Everyone wins when friends and family members can more easily help cancer patients get to appointments and support them in other ways.

Recognized Expertise

Sunny D. Mitchell, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained breast surgeon, is the Medical Director of The Breast Center. She has extensive experience caring for patients at high risk for breast cancer. She specializes in oncoplastic breast surgery (breast conservation or lumpectomy) performed through an anatomically ideal incision (Hidden Scar Surgery) and nipple-sparing mastectomy, which leaves a small surgical footprint while still providing the best possible medical result, and trains other surgeons in those techniques. The Breast Center is a member of Montefiore Health System, an academic system nationally recognized for quality healthcare. The system is composed of 15 hospitals and more than 200 outpatient ambulatory care sites. Patients at The Breast Center have access to the resources of the larger health system, including a comprehensive clinical research program and specialist consultants when needed.

National Excellence

The Breast Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), which is administered by the American College of Surgeons. NAPBC accreditation is only given to centers that provide the highest quality breast care as determined by a voluntary and rigorous evaluation of their performance.

The Breast Center also has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, receiving this designation in all programs: mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Nationally, only a small percentage of imaging centers receive this designation of excellence.
